Every year I try to donate sessions to a few organizations doing works I feel passionately about, one such organization is Rebecca’s Gift. If you are new, Rebecca’s Gift is a 501(3)c non-profit that raises funds to send families on healing vacation after the death of a child. It was started in memory of Rebecca Meyer, who died from brain cancer on her 6th birthday. Rebecca’s family are close to my own, and as such this mission to help families begin their path to healing when there are no other organizations out there helping families after the child has died, is very special to me.
This spring I had a session with a family who won one of my sessions through a Rebecca’s Gift silent auction. They chose to do their session at a playground in their neighborhood, a place their children are familiar with and where special childhood memories are made. We decided that a lifestyle session seemed most appropriate, the kids could be playful and the resulting images would be more treasured as a result.
After the initial posed images the girls were let loose on the playground to explore and have fun. My favorite moment came when they discovered a tiny ladybug and huddled close to one another, watching in fascination as it crawled over and around their small hands. Just one of those normal childhood bits of magic you can’t manufacture with poses. They are my favorite things to capture, these candid moments.
I knew right away their parents would love them.
